The headache is one of the most frequent, and pregnant women suffer from it more often during the first and third trimesters. Although they might be caused by hormonal fluctuations, exhaustion, hydration problems, or stress, frequent headaches might disrupt your comfort and inner peace. The good news is? It is possible to treat most of the pregnancy headaches without medication.

At Mannat Fertility Centre, we are mother-friendly and holistic. These are the ways you can avoid and treat pregnancy headaches without any danger or harm.

1. Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

Headaches are mainly caused by dehydration. When you are pregnant, your body requires extra fluids to accommodate your growing baby. Try to take 8-10 glasses of water a day. Keep a water bottle and take small sips. Even herbal teas, such as peppermint or chamomile (in small amounts), can be relaxing.

In case of vomiting related to morning sickness, drink more fluids by taking coconut water or oral rehydration drinks to restore electrolytes.

2. Eat Balanced Meals and Don’t Skip Snacks

Headaches may be caused by skipping meals and resulting in low blood sugar levels. Eat small, balanced meals three to four times a day, consisting of a combination of complex carbs, protein and healthy fats. Always carry snacks such as fruits, dry fruits, or crackers, which are whole grain in nature, particularly on the go.

Foods that contain caffeine, sugar and processed foods should not be taken since they may also cause headaches to some women.

3. Get Plenty of Rest and Sleep

Sleep deprivation and tiredness are some of the major causes of headaches. Try to get 7 to 9 hours of sound sleep at night. Sleep on your side with the help of pillows that will support your body. Sleep during the daytime in short intervals, should there be the need to, and pay attention to what your body is telling you.

Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, warm baths, low lights, soft music, and no screens may assist in calming your mind and preparing it to get a good night of sleep.

4. Apply Cold or Warm Compresses

Tension-type headaches should be lessened by a cold compress on your forehead or the back of your neck. Instead, tight muscles may be exercised by applying a warm compress on the shoulders or the base of the neck, which will help ease the pain and loosen up the stiffness. Experiment with them and find out which one suits you the best.

5. Try Prenatal Yoga and Gentle Stretches

Exercise enhances the flow of blood and secretion of good hormones. To relieve the tension and avoid headaches, it is possible to use prenatal yoga, simple neck and shoulder stretching and go on leisurely walks. It is essential to consult your doctor before getting into any exercise routine when pregnant.

6. Reduce Stress Through Relaxation Techniques

Headaches are caused by emotional stress. Relaxation methods to be attempted include:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Guided meditation
  • Calming music
  • Being in nature

Even 10 minutes a day can help significantly as far as relaxing your nervous system is concerned.

7. Limit Screen Time and Rest Your Eyes

Looking at screens repeatedly may result in eyestrain and subsequent headaches. Use the 20-20-20 rule: take breaks every 20 minutes and look at an object that is 20 ft. away and 20 sec. Away. Long. Change the brightness of your phone or computer and use blue light filters where available.
