This stage occurs about 5 to 6 days after the sperm fertilises an egg. The Blastocyst will implant within the uterine wall, eventually transforming into an embryo and, finally, the foetus. Taking care of the entire process, from the hatching of the Blastocyst to the final implantation, is important. What do you mean by Blastocyst?

As mentioned earlier, Blastocyst forms when the fertilised egg gets into the second growing phase. The hatching of the Blastocyst takes place from day 5 to 9 after fertilisation.

  • Blastocyst follows after the initial morula phase, where the egg turns into a solid ball of cells. It is on the 3rd day.
  • During this point, the growing embryo is in need of extra space. For compensating that need, the Blastocyst forms a hollow and larger ball of cells with a fluid centre.
  • Blastocyst will develop multiple layers. The thinner outer layer is called the trophoblast. It will eventually turn into a placenta.
  • The fluid cavity inside the ball is called blastocoels.
  • The Blastocyst will cover a diameter of around 0.1 to 0.2 mm and will go through a characteristic phase of rapid growth.
  • Morula consists of dozens of cells. And in Blastocyst, the number of cells will turn into hundreds.

The stages of Blastocyst:

Before proceeding further with the hatching of the Blastocyst, it is time to check the different stages of the Blastocyst. For that, you need to learn about ovulation, conception and pregnancy.

  • After the initial 14 days of beginning a menstrual period, the ovaries release one ovum or egg.
  • The egg travels through the fallopian tubes, where it will wait to get fertilised by the sperm.
  • If fertilisation fails, the egg will move into the uterine, where it exits the body during the next menstrual cycle.
  • However, if fertilisation occurs, the egg becomes a zygote. Zygote will then travel through the fallopian tube to the uterus within 3 to 5 days of fertilisation.
  • The zygote cell will divide continuously to form Blastocyst.
  • Before the hatching of the Blastocyst, the Blastocyst will remain within the uterus for multiple days before getting implanted within the inner uterine wall lining.
  • It will continue to make newer cells, which then get separated into layers.
  • The Blastocyst will turn into an embryo after around 10 to 12 days of fertilisation.
  • It remains as an embryo for 9 weeks after implantation and later will turn into a foetus.

The implantation of Blastocyst:

Before the hatching of the Blastocyst, it is time for the implantation. It mainly happens towards the top part of the uterus. In some rare instances, the Blastocyst never gets to make it to the uterus. Instead, it will implant outside the uterus, within the fallopian tube. That results in ectopic pregnancy.

Signs of implantation:

Around 1/3 rd people will experience light bleeding or spotting during implantation. Spotting is targeted as the early signs of pregnancy. During this stage, the colour of the blood is either light pink or dark brown. The spotting will last for a few hours to a few days. It won’t be similar to your period. Some of the other signs of Blastocyst implantation are listed below:

  • Pain in your lower back
  • Headaches
  • Tenderness of your breast
  • Nausea
  • Mood swings
  • Mild period cramps, which won’t be as crucial as menstrual cycles
