You are already in the second trimester at week 18 and the signs of pregnancy begin to become noticeable. More energy, a more evident baby bump, and increased fetal movements are some of the symptoms you may feel in this week of pregnancy. Women are used to feeling their baby’s first movements, or “quickening,” at about this stage of pregnancy. As time goes by, your growing uterus can cause round ligament pain and slight backaches. Shifts in hormones can cause changes in skin pigmentation, stuffy nose and occasional dizziness. Remember to drink enough, eat wholesome meals, and rest enough to give your baby what they need.
At the end of week 18, your baby is about 5.5 inches long and weighs almost 7 ounces, about the size of a sweet potato. The nervous system is developing quickly so that your baby can hear external sounds like your voice and heartbeat. Your baby’s bones are getting firmer, and small prints are appearing on the fingertips. At this point, several ultrasounds can easily identify the gender of your baby. Digestive development is continuing and your child is beginning to practice swallowing and hiccupping.
