Congratulations on completing Week 14 of your pregnancy, which is the start of the second trimester. The second trimester often makes mums-to-be feel more comfortable because their earlier discomforts are reduced. Many expectant mothers complain about feeling more vibrant, positive mood and refreshed appearance.
Your uterus is increasing in size to make room for your growing baby and this may be the first signs of a baby bump. Round ligament pain is a mild discomfort that many expectant women experience as their bodies prepare to carry their growing baby. You may also see darker spots on your skin, which is usually referred to as melasma or the pregnancy mask. Drinking lots of water and using sunscreen is good for your skin.
This period is very helpful to spend to think about your nutrition, do some light exercise, and schedule your prenatal check-ups. Having a prenatal ultrasound at this stage will help you monitor your baby’s progress.
At week 14, your baby’s length is about 3.5 inches and they weigh about 1.5 ounces, looking like a small lemon. This week marks important developments in your baby’s growth.
Your baby’s face is developing and some may even begin sucking their thumb. Your baby’s total size is growing rapidly, and lanugo, soft downy hair, begins to cover the skin for warmth and protection. Within the baby, important organs like the liver and spleen are developing, and the kidneys are producing urine.
Your baby is already moving arms and legs, and you might even see them frowning, although it’s a bit early for these movements to be felt. In the next few weeks, your baby’s movements will be indicated by mild fluttering sensations.
