You can begin to feel more energy as the second trimester begins for you at week 16. When your baby bump increases in size, you sometimes can feel soft movements, which are often referred to as quickening. Being able to feel your expanding uterus can lead to round ligament pain, mild stretching sensations, or you may observe that you are getting hungrier. Your body is still going through hormonal changes, which may make your skin appear more radiant, your hair thicker, and sometimes cause nasal congestion.
Your healthcare provider may monitor your baby’s heartbeat at this point and mention planning for screenings like the mid-pregnancy ultrasound. Safe exercise and a diet full of essential nutrients can help to foster your health and your baby’s development while you are pregnant.
At week 16, your baby is approximately 4-5 inches long, or about the size of an avocado, and weighs nearly 3.5 ounces. Their sensitive face is developing muscles, allowing them to express emotions such as frowning and squinting. Your baby’s arms and legs are fully formed and they are moving even though you may not be aware of every movement.
The little one’s blood is active, transporting about 25 quarts of blood each day. Your baby’s ears are now in the right position and may begin to respond to sounds outside your body. Soft talking or playing soft music can help strengthen your bond with your baby and promote vital early development.
As you move along the calendar of your pregnancy, absorb the pleasure of seeing your baby grow and your connection grow.
