You are now well into your third trimester, at this point – week 29. The additional requirements of pregnancy means that your body is also supporting your baby’s growth, which may make you feel more tired, get backaches, or feel short of breath. Because your body is developing, you may have a harder time sleeping – a pregnancy pillow can help you sleep better and be more comfortable. Braxton Hicks contractions may start to prepare your body for the demands of labor.
Being conscious of your diet, drinking lots of fluids, and gently moving your body can be very helpful to you and your baby this week. More frequent visits during this period will keep your medical team updated on your health and your baby’s progress. If you haven’t already made your birth preferences, use this chance to make your birth plan and pack your hospital bag with any required items.
Your baby has increased in weight to about 2.5 to 3 pounds and in length to about 15 inches – about the size of a butternut squash. Your baby’s brain is developing rapidly, regulating their body temperature. Your baby’s muscle tone is improving and each stretch and kick feels more forceful than the previous one.
Your baby can already see light and react to sounds (even your voice). Your baby’s lungs are still developing and they are now producing surfactant, which will help their lungs work when they are born. Although your baby still has to grow, early birth can have a very high survival rate with medical help.
