Congratulations! Congratulations on Week 21 – you’re now officially more than half way through your pregnancy. More visibility of the baby bump usually means that you are more energetic than in the first trimester. An increasing appetite is normal, but make sure that your diet is nutritious enough to support your baby’s growth.
Some symptoms you may be experiencing now are discomfort from round ligament pain, some swelling and increased fetal activity. You can also have changes in your skin, including a glowing complexion or darker pigmentation along the linea nigra. Keeping a good hydration and doing moderate exercise such as walking or prenatal yoga might help ease some discomfort.
If you have not yet had a prenatal appointment, make one to check that your baby is developing correctly and to discuss any concerns with your doctor.
Your baby’s length at 21 weeks is approximately 10.5 inches, and they weigh 12-14 ounces – almost the size of a carrot. Ingestion of amniotic fluid helps your baby’s taste buds to mature as his digestive system develops.
This week your baby will begin to experience REM sleep cycles, showing that they are now able to dream. With their muscles developing, you may see more obvious movements and kicks during this week.
Even though the skin of your baby is still tender and frequently transparent, they are starting to develop vernix caseosa, a protective coating which shields their skin from the amniotic fluid.
Keep on stressing self-care practices and continue with routine prenatal check-ups in order for you and your growing baby to remain healthy.
